Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has monitored the Breonna Taylor protests in Louisville, but he hasn’t been seen in the crowds.
Don’t expect to see him on the street Saturday night, either — in a sitdown interview with The Courier Journal earlier in the evening, Fischer said joining the crowd would be “a distraction to our police officers” and would not be a good decision.
“We’re not going to solve this issue of systematic racism by me walking into a crowd,” Fischer said. “And it’s a big crowd with lots of people all over the place. Where do you go? So I don’t think it’s a safe thing to do for our citizens.”
Fischer in the interview said he appreciated those who have been peaceful in their protests but that Friday night’s demonstrations took an “element of anarchy” as property was damaged across downtown Louisville. The mayor called in the National Guard to assist with Saturday’s protests.
